I planned on posting these photos even before Hurricane Sandy made an ominous beeline for Manhattan. Now it seems fitting to share images of New York City in support and recognition of the people of New York and the surrounding areas.
The broad palette of colors from electric lighting in a modern metropolis like New York City can make color balancing tricky in post-processing. In this photo, I couldn’t use white objects for white balancing, since even the white signs were lit up by colored lights. Instead I relied on memory, judging which colored lights were brightest, and simply what looked the best to me.
I loved shooting around Time Square at night. The ambient lighting is so strong that you can use a fairly high ISO with a fast lens and still get crisp photos. The combination of the shallow depth of field and the unusually bright artificial lighting creates some incredible effects.
